The Perfect Father’s Day Craft for Kids

Father’s Day is a great opportunity to recognize the important job of being a dad.  What better way to show dad you love him than by writing a sweet note that he can carry around with him?  These Father’s Day key chains are the perfect way to show dad some love and the perfect Father’s Day craft for kids! You could actually use this idea for any holiday!  Mother’s Day, Christmas, Teacher appreciation.  So many fun ways to make someone feel special.

For this project you’ll need the following materials:

  • Key chain rings (these are the ones I like)
  • Pliers to open the key ring

Directions for Father’s Day Craft

Once you have all your supplies together, it’s time to get started!

  1. The first thing I do is cut the Shrinky Dink Paper to size for the lined paper craft.  Each sheet is about 8×10.  Cut it into fourths.
  2. Then, round the edges so they’re not sharp and pokey.
  3. Using a ruler or straight edge, draw the two red lines about 1/2 inch from the top and 1/4 inch from the side.
  4. Now you can draw the blue horizontal lines.  I don’t do exact measurements, I just kind of eye ball it.
  5. Once you have your lines drawn you can have your child or student write something to their loved one.  They can also draw a little picture too!
  6. Finally, don’t forget to hole punch.  You’ll want to make the hole about 1/4 inch in.  If it’s too far the key chain won’t be able to close but if it’s too close to the edge it will open.

Time to bake!

There should be directions that come with your Shrinky Dink paper, but I can give you a quick breakdown.

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. I use a cookie sheet with parchment paper, but the Parchment paper is not necessary.
  3. Make sure your shrinky dinks aren’t too close together.
  4. The directions say about 1 – 3 minutes, but most of mine took longer than that.  Be patient.
  5. THEY WILL START TO CURL IN THE OVEN.  Don’t panic!  Just let them do their thing.  I noticed that the longer I left it in the more it began to flatten.  Try not to open the oven either, that will let the heat out and the shirnky dink will start to cool.
  6. When you remove them from the oven, you can use a spatula to flatten them out even more.

After you bake it, you can add the key chain ring.  I also use these cute gift bags.

Students can decorate the gift bags and are always so excited to give a wrapped gift!
